Retail SEO case study: Altered State Comics
A neighborhood comic shop needs to be visible beyond its front door. Altered State Comics expanded its top-three Google Maps coverage across the sampled area, while its separate Business Profile report recorded more calls, website clicks, and direction requests.

“comic book stores near me”
99 → 149
180 → 391
Two distinct comparisons: grid snapshots dated June 21 and July 1, 2025; Business Profile report dated May 13 to August 13, 2025, versus its “last period.” The report does not print the prior period’s dates. Activity is not verified sales or store visits.
A local store competing for nearby shoppers.
Altered State Comics serves readers and collectors from its St. Louis storefront. Customers can shop online, but searches for a comic shop nearby create a different opportunity: helping someone find the store, check its details, and decide to visit.
The local SEO work focused on Google Business Profile optimization and supporting local listings. The execution packet describes a profile-led project, not a full website rebuild. The aim was to strengthen visibility for relevant searches such as “comic book stores near me” and “comic book store St. Louis.”
What this case study measures: ranking positions at sampled locations and platform-reported Business Profile activity. It does not claim a measured increase in sales, unique customers, or foot traffic.
For another retailer, the starting point is the same practical question: can people searching nearby find the right information about your business? Our local SEO services for small businesses start with that review.
Documented work
Profile accuracy, useful content, and local listings.
Google Business Profile
The execution packet records a revised business description, relevant product and location information, two local posts, and photo uploads. The later activity log records additional photos, posts, and published questions and answers.
Google Business Profile optimizationCitation consistency
The packet records submissions to more than ten directories, including ComicShopLocator and Bing Places, with matching business information. The later report also shows a completed action labeled “Updated 47 directories.” Repeated log entries are not counted as additional unique directories.
Citation audits and cleanupLocation-based measurement
BrightLocal grids show how rankings vary around the store. Comparing the individual numbered points makes it possible to see changes that an overall average can hide. A separate report tracks Google profile activity.

Google Maps ranking evidence
What changed across the map?
Each numbered circle is one search location. A 1 is the highest ranking; green circles show positions 1 through 3. These exports show the same visible 7-by-7 arrangement and map extent. The strongest directly matched keyword is the plural phrase below. Export dates are one day after the selected scan dates.
“Comic book stores near me”
Select either report to inspect the original image. Exports generated June 22 and July 2, 2025.
Ten days between snapshots
Ten more sampled locations reached the top three.
| Measure | June 21 | July 1 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-three placements | 23 / 49 | 33 / 49 | +10 points |
| Share of points in top three | 46.9% | 67.3% | +20.4 percentage points |
| Reported average map rank | 4.5 | 2.8 | 1.7 positions better |
The second row from the top had no top-three placements in the earlier grid and five in the later grid. The bottom row grew from two to five. Across the entire grid, 37 points improved, 11 stayed unchanged, and one moved from position 1 to 2. That is a broader improvement than a single green circle near the shop.
Grid coverage is not market share. These are sampled search locations, not people or searches. Underlying coordinate and spacing settings were not included in the PDFs, so the point comparison is based on the visibly aligned grids.
“Comic book store near me”
Select either report to inspect the original image. Exports generated June 22 and July 2, 2025.
The reported average moved from 4.6 to 2.9.
The upper rows became less dominated by double-digit positions, and the central green area expanded. The improvement was not uniform: the top row still contained positions 5 through 10 in the later snapshot.
The later report’s keyword includes a trailing comma. Treat this as a comparison of closely related query snapshots, not a fully controlled exact-query test.
“Comic book store St. Louis”
Select either report to inspect the original image. Exports generated June 22 and July 2, 2025.
The reported average moved from 7.2 to 2.8.
The earlier grid was mostly positions 4 through 11. The later grid shows many position-2 results across the center and west, while the eastern edge remains mostly positions 4 and 5. Showing both areas matters: better average visibility does not mean first place everywhere.
The later query label includes a trailing comma and different capitalization. The PDFs do not expose all scan settings. These snapshots demonstrate recorded visibility differences, not a controlled attribution test.
“Working with Colin and the team has been easy and fun. We can feel the increased visibility at our small business in St. Louis. Thank you, Local Howl!”
Separate Business Profile comparison
More reported calls, clicks, and direction requests.
The Google Business Profile report covers May 13 to August 13, 2025. Its comparison columns are labeled “last period” and “this period.” The earlier period’s exact dates are not printed, so they are not inferred here.
| Reported activity | Last period | This period | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone calls | 99 | 149 | +51% |
| Website clicks | 158 | 220 | +39% |
| Direction requests | 180 | 391 | +117% |

What these numbers do not prove: a direction request is not a confirmed store visit, a website click is not a purchase, and reported phone activity is not a qualified lead count. The report does not isolate SEO from seasonality or other marketing.
Real queries. Clear limits.
Semrush’s US database reports an estimated 49,500 monthly searches for “comic book store near me” and 390 for “comic book store st louis.” These figures show query demand in the US database, not traffic earned by Altered State Comics.
Semrush keyword research retrieved September 19, 2026. Volume estimates are current research context, not measurements of the 2025 campaign. Similar keyword variants overlap and are not added together.

Local SEO for retail stores: FAQs
What is local SEO for retail stores?
Local SEO helps a physical store appear when nearby shoppers search for its products or business category. For a comic shop, that includes Google Maps, its Google Business Profile, accurate directory listings, and useful website content. This case study shows local ranking coverage and reported profile activity, not an ecommerce revenue claim.
How can a retail store improve its Google Maps ranking?
Start with accurate business information, appropriate categories, current hours, relevant products and photos, and a process for responding to reviews. Check rankings from several nearby locations, not just the store address. Google describes relevance, distance, and prominence as key factors, so no agency can promise the same position everywhere. See our Google Business Profile optimization service.
What did Google Business Profile optimization include for Altered State Comics?
The project records document profile-description updates, local posts, photo uploads, and citation work. The later activity log also records directory updates and published questions and answers. These records show what was done; they do not isolate which individual change caused a ranking movement.
What are local SEO citations, and why does citation cleanup matter?
A citation is an online mention of a business, commonly including its name, address, and phone number. Citation cleanup corrects inconsistent information and duplicate listings so customers can find the right business details. Altered State’s execution packet records submissions to more than ten directories, including ComicShopLocator and Bing Places. Learn about a local citation audit.
How long does local SEO take to show results?
The two BrightLocal snapshots shown here are ten days apart: June 21 and July 1, 2025. For “comic book stores near me,” top-three placements increased from 23 to 33 of 49 sampled points. That is this comparison’s timeline, not a guaranteed turnaround for another business. Rankings can fluctuate, and a longer series is needed to judge whether gains last.
How do you measure local SEO results for a small business?
Track map-ranking coverage, Business Profile activity, website inquiries, and verified sales separately. Altered State’s report lists phone calls, website clicks, and direction requests. Those actions indicate customer interest, but they do not establish answered calls, unique prospects, store visits, or purchases. See how we track local SEO performance.
How much does local SEO cost for a retail business?
Scope depends on the number of locations, the condition of the profile and website, citation issues, and local competition. Review Local Howl’s current plans or request an audit before choosing a package. A competitor’s budget or a historical project fee is not a reliable quote for your store.
Can Local Howl help small businesses outside St. Louis?
Yes. Local Howl works with small businesses across the United States. This St. Louis, Missouri store is one example of local search work. Your audit should focus on your own market, business category, and nearby competitors. Request a free local SEO audit to see where to start.
